Uruguay Flag Meaning & History

Uruguay’s flag was first adopted on December 18, 1828, and featured 19 white and blue stripes. This number was reduced to nine on July 11, 1830, which remains the national flag today. President of Uruguay Joaquín Suárez created the flag’s design.

The original flag had nine blue stripes representing the different regions of Uruguay. However, this flag was difficult to see from far away, so the stripes were reduced to nine in total.

The sun in the canton is the Sun of May, a symbol of the Incan god Inti. The symbol’s name refers to the May Revolution, which established a local government in the Spanish colonial territory that included modern-day Argentina, Bolivia, part of Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
